Outlook and Zaurus Incompatibilities
Error and Warning Conditions
The following is a list of the most common conditions which will cause an Errors and Warnings screen to be displayed during Synchronize, Import or Export:
|
Condition |
Error or Warning |
What happens |
How to fix it |
|
An Outlook category for a task has more than 12 characters. |
Warning |
The Zaurus Label for a To Do is mapped, default, to the Categories in Outlook. The Zaurus Label may have no more than 12 characters. If an Outlook category has more than 12 characters, a Warning is issued.
The resulting To Do entry on the Zaurus has a label with the category truncated to 12 characters.
When a change is made to this Zaurus To Do entry, and then synchronized with Outlook, the Outlook category is changed to the truncated label. |
Make the category name which is used by the Task contain only 12 characters or less. |
|
An Outlook Appointment or To Do entry has a blank Subject. |
Error |
The Outlook Subject line is mapped, by default, to the Zaurus description. While Outlook allows a blank Subject, Zaurus does not allow a blank description. An Error results and the entry is not communicated. |
Enter a subject in every Outlook Appointment and Task.
OR
Map the Zaurus description field to some other appropriate field which always has the correct data in it for every appointment and to do entry. |
|
Outlook To Do entries use more than 32 categories total. |
Error |
The Zaurus Label for a To Do is mapped, default, to the Categories in Outlook. The Zaurus has only spots for a total of 32 labels. If all the To Do entries in Outlook use more than 32 categories, an error will occur. The To Do entries which push the number of labels past 32 will not be communicated. |
Use a To Do filter which reduces the To Do entries communicated. With less To Do entries being transferred, possibly, fewer categories will be in use.
OR
Reduce the total number of used categories in Outlook to 32 or less. |
|
Individual Outlook field contains more than 2K (kilobytes ) worth of data.
This is a fairly rare occurrence.
|
Error |
Each Zaurus field (i.e. Appointment and To Do description or Contact Name or Address) can only contain a maximum of 2K worth of data. If you have an Outlook entry which has an individual record with more than 2K of data, an error will occur and that record will not be communicated to the Zaurus.
This could happen with very large descriptions. |
Identify the offending record and delete some of the data. |
Feature Differences and Their Effects
There are differences in features between the Zaurus and Outlook that do not result in an Error or a Warning about which you may want to be aware.
|
Condition |
What happens |
|
An Outlook To Do has more than 5 Categories associated with it. |
Outlook To Do categories are mapped, by default, to Zaurus To Do labels. A Zaurus To Do may only have 5 Labels assigned to it. An Outlook To Do which has more than 5 categories is communicated to the Zaurus To Do with 5 labels where the last of the 5 labels has all the remaining labels concatenated together. For instance, say that an Outlook To Do has the categories:
Travel
Home
Work
Holiday
Vac
Off
The resulting Zaurus To Do would have the labels:
Travel
Home
Work
Holiday
Vac, Off (This is a single label.)
A Zaurus label may not have more than 12 characters. Concatenated categories resulting in a label of more than 12 characters will yield an error.
|
|
Zaurus Appointment Start Time is after the End Time. |
While Zaurus allows a Start Time which is after the End Time for the same day, Outlook does not. When an appointment in this condition is communicated to Outlook, the resulting Outlook record will be from the Start Time to the End Time of the following day. For example: |
|
|
Zaurus Appointment |
Outlook Appointment |
|
|
6/1 from 10:00am to 9:00am |
from 10:00 am 6/1 to 9:00am 6/2 |
|
An Outlook appointment is set to All Day. |
Zaurus does not have a similar All Day feature. An appointment which is added to Outlook as All Day is communicated to the Zaurus with no times. |
|
A Zaurus To Do priority is added as something other than Low, Normal or High, which are the only priorities available in Outlook. |
Zaurus Priority
0 or space
1
2 or greater and A through Z |
Resulting Outlook Priority
Low
Normal
High |
|
A Zaurus description allows multiple lines, the Outlook subject line does not. |
The Outlook subject field is mapped, by default, to the Zaurus Description field. Because of this multi-line difference, a Zaurus description with multiple lines will be communicated to Outlook's subject with boxes where the line breaks are. |
Installation Directory
Outlook handles internal menus somewhat differently that the other PIM applications. If you choose to install SynchroLynx, then later choose to install it again to a different folder, you will need to follow these steps to correct the menu:
- Uninstall SynchroLynx from the Add / Remove feature in Windows 95.
- Open Outlook.
- From the Outlook Tools menu, selection Options.
- Select the General tab.
- Click the Add In Manager button.
- Select the SLX entry and click Remove.
- Click OK, closing the Add In manager screen.
- Click OK, closing the Options screen.
- Install SynchroLynx from the floppy disks, according to the steps at the beginning of this manual.
