Import/Export

Application Selection Import/Export

Select the applications for which you would like to Import or Export.

There are four applications which are common to the Zaurus and the PIMs which you can import or export:

  • Appointments
  • To Do’s (Tasks)
  • Contacts
  • Birthday / Anniversary

Some PIMs do not support Birthday / Anniversary entries. If the PIM does not support Annual events, this option will be missing from the screen.

Next to each component is a button for application which allows you to identify specific information about each application.

You can choose to Append data to the destination or Overwrite the data. If you choose to Append, the data is added on to the existing data. If you choose to Overwrite, the data in the destination application will be deleted and replaced with the imported or exported data.

Filter Data

Data Filtering

On Synchronize, Import and Export the data filter screen is used to select the data to transfer. By selecting to transfer only the data you need, you can speed the transfer as well as use less disk space or Zaurus memory.

For Import and Export, you can filter Appointment entries and To Do entries based on the date. You can filter the Contact information based on whether or not a specified field contains the text that you include. For Synchronize, you can filter on Appointment and To Do by date, but you cannot filter based on a Contact field. Filter Data screen tabs will appear for the applications based on whether or not you are doing an import, export or synchronization as well as the applications selected.

  • Appointments
  • To Dos
  • Contacts

Tabs will be displayed only for those applications which you have selected to import or export in the Application Selection screen.

The selection criteria is different for each Zaurus application.

Appointment Filter

The Appointment application is filtered by the appointment start date.

All Data

If you select all data, all appointments will be imported or exported. You must then select the number of weeks worth of recurring data which should be imported or exported.

Filter Data

To filter the data, select the number of weeks in the past and the number of weeks in the future which contain the appointments to import or export. If the start date of an appointment is in this period, it will be considered included in the import or export.

To Do Filter

The To Do application is filtered by the Zaurus To Do date and the PIM start date.

All Data

If you select all data, all To Do entries will be imported or exported. You must then select the number of weeks worth of recurring data which should be imported or exported.

Filter Data

To filter the data, select the number of weeks in the past and the number of weeks in the future which contain the To Do entries to import or export. If the start date of an appointment is in this period, it will be considered included in the import or export. To Do entries with no date will always be included in the transfer, regardless of the filter settings.

Include Completed

For To Do entries, select whether or not to import or export completed To Dos.

Contact Filter

The Contacts are filtered based on whether a specified field contains the specified text.

To filter the contact data select the contact filter check box. Select the field to filter on from the pull down list. Then type the text that an entry must contain to be included in the Import or Export.

You cannot filter on Contacts for Synchronization. You can only filter on Contacts for import and export.

Field Mapping

What is Field Mapping?

The Field Mapping screen allows you to customize the transfer of data between the Zaurus and the PIM Software. Since the fields on the Zaurus are not the same as the fields in the PIM, you can indicate which fields should be aligned one to the other with a link.

In order to have data transfer between the Zaurus and the PIM software a link must exist between the individual fields which will have data transferred between them. For instance, the Appointment Start Date field in the PIM software must be linked to the Appointment Date field on the Zaurus. The collection of links which tells SynchroLynx what to do with the data is called Field Mapping. When you first install SynchroLynx, default links are created for you.

You can see that a link exists between fields when a line connects them on the screen. More than one field on Zaurus can be mapped to a single field in the PIM software and vice versa. For example, if the Zaurus contact file has only one Name field, the First Name and Last Name fields in PIM Software would be linked to the Zaurus Name field. When more than two fields are linked to a single field, a field separator must be identified.

You can link fields with the same data type to each other. You can map a date field on the Zaurus to a date field on the PIM software and so forth. You can also map any data type to a text field. Icons next to each field indicates the data type.

Creating Links

Create a link by identifying a field in the PIM Software list and a field in the Zaurus list. There are two methods for creating links between fields:

Drag and Drop

Simply click one of the fields and, while holding down the left mouse button, drag the field on top of the field to which you wish to link. If the mapping is not allowed, a circle with a line through it will be displayed.

Create Link button

Click the field in the PIM software list to link, then click the field in the Zaurus list. Click the Create Link button. If you select two fields which cannot be linked, the create link button will be unavailable (gray).

Editing Links

When two or more fields are mapped to a single field, the order in which the fields should appear and the separator must be identified.

For example, the fields First Name and Last Name are mapped to the Zaurus field Name. If you enter the name on the Zaurus as Last Name, First Name, you will want the field mapping to have Last Name before First Name with a field separator of comma. If you enter the name on the Zaurus as First Name Last Name, then you will want to have the First Name field before the Last Name field with space[SP] as the separator.

The separators available by button are:

, comma

[SP] space

[CR] blank line (carriage return)

/ forward slash

; semicolon

: colon

+ plus sign

- hyphen

Or you can type your own separator into the box. The Formula window shows you exactly how the data is mapped.

Delete Links

Delete a link between fields by clicking the field in the PIM software list and the field in the Zaurus list and clicking the Delete Link button.

Clear All Links

To remove all links and start over, click the Clear All Links button. After clicking Clear All, a confirmation dialog will confirm your desire to clear all links.

Please note that the Clear All Links function cannot be undone. If you have made changes to the links, they will be lost. You can reset the links to the SynchroLynx default by selecting Reset.

Arrange Links

The Arrange Links button arranges the fields in the PIM software list and the Zaurus list to make the links most easily discerned. Clicking the Arrange Links button makes the links between fields more visible but does not change the function of the mapping.

Before Arrange Links Button clicked

After Arrange Links Button clicked

Reset Links

Click the Reset Links button to return all field links to the SynchroLynx default. This will remove any changes made to the field links.

The Reset Links function cannot be undone. If you have made changes to the links, they will no longer be reflected.
