Quick Start Guide

Launching RuppLynx 4.0

From the Start menu, select Programs/RuppLynx 4.0/RuppLynx 4.0.

The Main window will appear with the Rupplynx Main Toolbar at the top
of the screen.

Main Toolbar

Most of the buttons on the Main Toolbar correspond to the applications on your hand-held unit. There is also a Transfer button to import/export data between your hand-held unit and your PC.

• To see the title of each button, move your cursor on to the button and

rest it there for a moment. A
"Bubble Help" description of the
button will appear.

• If the toolbar is too wide for the
screen, click on the arrow at the far

right to scroll to the end of the toolbar.

The first thing you will want to do is create a compressed PC Backup File of the data on your hand-held unit. Then you will import the data from your hand-held unit to RuppLynx so that you can display and edit it on your PC.

Creating a PC Backup File

1. To start, click the Transfer icon on the main toolbar. The Transfer Files Window will appear. Before you can backup your data, you will need to set up the link between your hand-held unit
and your PC.

2. Make sure your unit is properly connected, that the correct link path is

selected (cable or wireless) and that it is in PC Link Mode.

3. Click on Link Setup. The Link Setup window will appear. Use these controls to specify how data will be transferred (some options are not available for certain YO-series hand-held units):

Comm Port: Specify the Comm Port you are using to link your PC. If you don’t know the port number, select Auto Detect.

IR and IR Actisys Support: Indicate if you are using an infrared adapter and whether or not it is an Actisys unit.

Receive Mode: This controls how data is received by your PC. Choose Overwrite to replace the files currently in your PC with the ones you transferring, Append to add the transferred files to those currently in your PC, or Merge to add only those transferred files that are different from any existing records. (This is like appending, except it eliminates duplicate records.)

Send Mode: This controls how data is received by your hand-held unit. Choose Overwrite to replace the files currently in your unit or Append to add the transferred files to those currently in your unit. (Your hand-held unit cannot merge records, so the "Append" command can lead to duplicate records.)

Recommendation: Do not choose the "Overwrite" option for send or receive modes until you are comfortable running the program and have successfully made a backup file. If you accidentally overwrite the data on your hand-held unit with the empty data fields in your PC, the data on your hand-held unit will be permanently erased.

Exception: To import and preserve a picture field from your Contacts application, you must choose overwrite — not merge — or your picture
will be lost.

Port Settings: In most cases, you won’t have to adjust these settings. If necessary, you can customize the bps (bits per second), data bits, parity,
stop bits and flow control of the link. Select the advanced menu to
customize buffers.

Back up Files: Select this option to have RuppLynx create a backup file of the data stored in your PC. (Highly recommended.)

Information: Verify the hand-held unit with which RuppLynx is
set up to communicate. If you have chosen the wrong Zaurus or OZ-Organizer model, you will need to reinstall. To change YO-Series model, see page 28.

Quit Link when done: Select this box to have your hand-held unit automatically quit PC Link mode when transfer is finished.

4. When you are done click OK. You will return to the Transfer Files window.

5. Click the Backup button at the bottom of the screen. A window will appear prompting you to specify a Backup File Name. (Do not change the .BKU suffix.) We recommend that you use today’s date to create the file name. That way you will always know when you last backed up your data. When you are done, click OK.

Example: for October 31st, 1997 name the backup
file 97-10-31.bku

6. You will be reminded that add-on software is not backed up. Click OK. If you have problems with your PC link or you get an error message like ‘Organizer not connected or responding,’ read the Troubleshooting section on page 65.

7. If you want to create a backup file for data stored on an IC card, click the RAM/CARD toggle button next to the right window so that it displays "CARD." The repeat steps 5 and 6. Make sure to save your card’s backup file with a different name then the one used for your hand-held unit’s main memory.

8. Your Backup File(s) will be stored in
your PC.

NOTE: IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU BACKUP YOUR DATA ON A REGULAR BASIS.

The Backup File includes not only data, but also settings for such items as the Filer on a Zaurus. All of this information is stored and compressed in one PC file. To decompress this file and restore the data to your unit, see page 68

You cannot use the Backup File to edit, print, import or export data. To transfer editable data from your hand-held unit to your PC, see the next section.

Transferring All the Data in Your Hand-Held Unit for Use by RuppLynx

1. Make sure that you are in the Transfer Files window and that your hand-held unit is properly connected. (If you are using a Zaurus, make sure you are in PC Link mode.) If you have not already configured the Link Setup, follow the instructions on page 12 and do so now.

2. In the right and left windows, you will find folders that correspond to each application of your hand-held unit. The right window represents data currently in your hand-held unit. The left window represents data in your PC (currently none). Make sure that both RAM/CARD buttons are toggled to RAM.

3. Click the Select All button next to the right window. All folders in the right window will be highlighted.

4. Click the Transfer button next to the right window that points toward the PC Files. All of your hand-held data will be copied to your PC. If you have problems with the link to your PC, or you get an error message like ‘Organizer not connected or responding,’ read the Troubleshooting section on page 66.

For more details on how to transfer data between your PC and your hand-held unit, see page 46.

Transferring Data from an IC Card

RuppLynx creates separate files for the data you store in the main memory of your unit, and the data you store on an IC card. To transfer data from your IC card to your PC:

1. Click on both RAM/CARD buttons so that they are toggled to CARD.

2. Click the Select All button next to the right window. All of the folders in the right window will be highlighted.

3. Click the Transfer button next to the right window. All of the data on your IC card will be transferred to your PC.
Note — this data is stored separately from the data transferred from the main memory of your hand-held unit.

Close the Transfer Files Window

To close the window, select Done at the bottom right of the window. You will return to the Main Window.

Displaying and Editing Data on Your PC

You can now use the main toolbar to display and edit your data. For example, to see your Contacts, click on the Contacts button.

You will find that RuppLynx applications work almost exactly the same way as the applications on your hand-held unit, allowing you to add and edit data with the added convenience of a PC keyboard and display. Hold your cursor over any application button for a moment and you will see a bubble help description of that button.

For detailed instructions on how to use RuppLynx applications,
see page 31.

Getting Help

RuppLynx offers very detailed help. To access the Help function, click the Help menu or press F1. In many program areas, pressing F1 will give you context sensitive help. You can also use "Bubble Help," which automatically describes the function of items you point to with the mouse. (To activate "Bubble Help," click on the File menu, select Preferences and choose Toolbar Setup.
